Figures are typical ranges drawn from breed standards and breeder and vet sources, rewritten and averaged by us. Coat tendency (DachsLife) 1 is lowest of the nine in owner-survey data. Surveys are not vet diagnoses and individual dogs vary far more than varieties do.

How the sizes are set

The international body (FCI) sizes dachshunds by chest circumference at 15 months or older. The American and British kennel clubs use weight and height bands instead, so the same dog can sit in different classes depending on the country. Our size choice on the home page follows the FCI names. See the life timetable for how weight changes with age and the colour guide for the coat colours each variety allows.
