Size rules in your country
- AKC (US): standard dogs are typically over 11 lb (5 kg) at 12 months; most are 16 to 32 lb (7 to 14.5 kg).
- The Kennel Club (UK): ideal show weight 9 to 12 kg for standard.
Back health
Smooth coat standard dogs had the highest IVDD prevalence in the DachsLife 2015 owner survey (24.4%, one survey, not a vet diagnosis). Every dachshund is at higher risk of disc disease than most breeds, whatever the variety. Read the back disease guide, learn the red flags and run the home audit.
