Smooth kaninchen (rabbit) dachshund
A Kaninchen (rabbit-sized) dachshund with a short, close, glossy coat that needs the least grooming but gives the least protection from cold and wet. FCI sizes by chest circumference at 15 months or older (27 to 32 cm for males, 25 to 30 cm for females); the US and UK use weight rules.

- AKC (US): no separate Kaninchen class; they fall within the miniature weight rule.
- The Kennel Club (UK): not a separate size; treated within miniature.
Back health
The DachsLife 2015 owner survey found the highest IVDD prevalence in smooth coat standard dogs (24.4%). It did not measure this size separately, so treat the coat tendency as a rough guide only. One survey, not a vet diagnosis. Every dachshund is at higher risk of disc disease than most breeds, whatever the variety. Read the back disease guide, learn the red flags and run the home audit.
