Dachshund colours and patterns

Twelve colours and patterns, which coats carry them and what registries accept. Colour never changes character, but a few patterns come with real health costs.

Red

The classic rusty to deep mahogany coat, sometimes with scattered black hairs on the back and ears.

Cream

A pale, wheat to champagne coat; the pigment is the same red family, diluted.

Black and tan

Black base with tan above the eyes, on the muzzle, chest, legs and under the tail.

Chocolate and tan

Liver-brown base with the same tan points as black and tan, and a brown nose.

Blue and tan

A diluted black: slate-grey base with tan points.

Isabella (fawn) and tan

A diluted chocolate: pale fawn-brown with tan points.

Wild boar

Agouti banding on each hair gives a mixed grey-brown tone with darker ears and muzzle.

Sable

Red hairs with dark tips, giving a dark saddle effect over a red body.

Brindle

Dark stripes over a red base, often most visible on the legs and body.

Dapple (merle)

Irregular grey or beige patches on a darker base. Eyes can be blue or wall-eyed.

Double dapple

Welfare concern

Mostly white coat with small dapple patches. We show it only to explain the welfare problem.

Piebald

White base with large patches of black, chocolate or red, often with a white blaze.

Choosing by colour

Choose a puppy for its parents' health testing, temperament and the breeder's honesty, not its coat. Be wary of anyone selling a colour as "rare" at a higher price. See which coats suit your life in the variety comparison.
