Default Could this be happening so soon?

Spirit jumped off of the sofa onto rug and cried. He now shivers and is not himself. WTH, he's only 1 and a half. Even last night, he seemed more subdued, but I thought it might be tummy upset from bully sticks that both had. Now I'm wondering if it isn't a disk. Praying it isn't. This morning, when taking him off bed and putting him on floor, he shook his head a lot.
Could this be a coincidence, G? He's too young!

Could it be he is missing Joshua? You know Josh was the one who was Spirit's guide on how to behave when you brought him home.....I know we never want to think the worst....could also be ears if he is shaking the head....Moose's has ears that get gunky all the time and when he shakes the head alot it means it is time for mom to clean out the ears.

Will be sending healing thoughts and prayers for spirit and for you. It sure has been a rough one for you the past 3 or 4 years with your dogs. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers also

    I just saw this.
I don't know if I told you but when Gala was between 6-8 months this happened to her twice.
I had her checked and it was her knee.
She was limping just a bit afterwards.
She had a slight movement of the knee, but not quite a luxating patella.
After I did some researched I found out that a dachshund's knee doesn't mature until it is between 18-24 months. And in that time you could get a "false possitive" on a luxating patella, that will actually correct itself with time as the dog finishes growing.
So, have you checked Spirit's knees?
Unless the jump was dramatic and there was trauma I do not think it is a disc, but run your hands gently down the spine to see if you find a sore spot.
CERTAINLY crate him until you take him to the vet.
I think odds are it's muscular: he fell incorrectly.
If you have a warm pad that you can do, put a folded towel on the sore area and then the warm pad.

Oh, and if he's shaking his head it just means it is NOT a cervical disk herniation... for sure. As it would HURT if he shook his head and he'd want to keep it low and still, not shake it.
Shaking his head is either allergies, ear mites, yeast, or similar. But certainly NOT a neck disk.
However, it doesn't mean he cannot have at the same time ear mites AND a back problem.
Importance? Rule out any ortho/neuro problem first, then ear mites.

    ...

Bully stick... did he eat a lot of it? Was it a new brand or have you given them before? Could it be an allergic reaction to it?

Okay, will do. Bully stick was new, organic kind.

How's Gala? You were going to the vet with her a few days ago. Got your pm. Going to bed soon. I'm a wimp. :-0

Oh crap, Jeannie, I just saw this message. I sure hope Spirit is ok - please let us know how the vet visit goes. You know how I feel about this little guy, so keeping fingers crossed that it is nothing serious... Love, Terry

I know. WTH? Praying it's nothing. He seems perkier tonight, but keeping him quiet, anyway. I cried today at the thought of it being a disc. He is so young and perky. Keeping him and Sage separated would be torture. Between this and losing Josh...I know God doesn't give us more than we can handle, but wtf? I would love to enjoy one doxy who is free of that ivdd, please, and would like to see just one doxy of mine enjoy life free of that disease. This is all I ask.

Still shoveling? Boy, you got hammered. It's been amazingly dry up here, and we love the snow! We are jealous. Hey, at least you have a snow day tomorrow.

It could be a disc but due to trauma, not to IVDD. And I don't think a "normal" jump would be enough to cause such trauma to cause a disc herniation on a non IVDD dog.
Yes, we've had young ones. They are exceptions. At his age I would think more of an ortho issue, a twisted muscle and adding to that either an allergic reaction or something from the bully stick or something else.
A dog with a painful back or neck just doesn't shake. It shivers in pain, has a hunched position of the back. If the neck is affected then the head is held low. And truth be told, by now, more disc material would've oozed out (since the herniation would've been violent/related to a jump) so you would be seeing MORE serious symptoms: usually after a few hours paresis sets in (wobbly/drunken walk), dragging of foot or feet, unsteady gait, etc.
If he seems better by now, just with a few hours of rest, odds are it was muscular.
Even if it was a tendon, it's too soon for him to feel better.
Check out the ears though, and ask about allergens, mites, etc.
