    Default Kongs

I would like to ask advice about "Kongs". I have never used them with my doxies. I went to Petco yesterday and there are so many. I did read on one that if you have an agressive chewer to get one to two sizes larger. I guess this would be the black one. Then I saw all these cans with stuff you can put into them. Now I would like to know about that too. What is your dogs favorite flavor if you use it? What is the best way to clean them? I do not want my Dottie getting sick. I thought I would get her one to give her something to do besides just laying in darkness (she went blind this month). Is there one brand of Kong that you would recommed over another brand? I know I am full of questions. I just want to be able to stimulate her. Instead of her just laying on the couch or in her bed when she is with Daddy at night, in the computer room (she is the only dog in there at that time). Thanks for any advice you can post for me.

Makkara had the red one....Moose the little blue and white puppy one. I never put the spray filling in there....i did try peanut butter in Makkara's but she didn't get it all out and talk about a gooey mess. I do however put hard treats in there. I got the Nutro apple treat and it wedged in the hole nicely. A bit snug but both were able to get the them out....I would put 2 or three. Kongs are not indistructable as they claim....Makkara did manage to take a small chunk out of the top and eventually so did Moose. I just went out an got new ones. I used to give them everytime we would leave the house for a long period of time so they would have something to keep them busy.

How about those balls that you can put food into maybe she could play with that I also remember a while back someone posted (or I read about them on some site I was at)about puzzles for the dogs to play with A treat would go inside and the dog would have to figure out how to get it out.... you could check on line to see if you can find them.

I know this is a big shock to both of you and the fact that it happened so fast didn't give much time for you to "get used" to it.

is there any way to get her to move around....maybe some extra mom time with a treat...offer it to her and make her come and get it. I know any time I say the word "treat" both of them come running....start in a cleared area where she won't run into anything and once she gets the confidence to get around start in a room she spends a lot of time in....I would try to get her off her duff and back to being active again.

    Hugs to you

All my kids have the red med size kong, tho Madigan did have a small pink puppy kong when she was real little, and Badger had a purple senior kong (which is now just sitting in the drawer since I can't manage to let anyone else use it just yet). For a treat I place a few small Charlie Bear treats in the bottom, squirt some cheese in, add a few more Charlie Bear treats, then some peanut butter. In the summer I will mix up peanut butter, yougurt and a banana, put the mix in a kong and set them in the freezer for awhile. You can go to www.kongcompany.com for more kong recipes!

Alexi had a red kong when she first came to live with me, unfortunitly a shepherd got a hold of it and it was distoyed. I never had to put anything inside of it she use to play with it just tossing it and pouncing on it. So I'm no help. The shepherds play catch with thers as I throw it and watch you battle over who brings it back.

We froze peanut butter in ours, chopped meat can be frozen in them too, but too much of that leads to the terrible "D" word. (diarrhea)
I never bought the cheese, seemed like too fatty a snack and who knows what's in it?
None of the dogs has ever just 'played' with a kong!
"Fill it with a treat or just don't bother!"
You get the "what do you expect me to do with that?" look.

Makkara loves to play catch with her Kong....It is so funny to watch that thing bounces all over the place and you never know where it will go!

KC and the big dogs have all manner of Kongs ... but we do not use the Kong products to fill them. Cookie pieces, liver treats, yogurt drops ... anything we can tuck inside. I know folks that put p-butter or yogurt in them and freeze them, but I am not a fan. KC and Bax get as much fun tossing them around as they do getting treats from them.

I want to thank all of you for your advice and am considering getting Dottie a Kong with your helpful hints. I do not think she will play with it. I think she will just chew on it. She is blind and want something for her to do, while Daddy on the computer at night.

I still want to ask...how do you feel is the best way to clean them. Is in the dishwasher okay?
