I was thinking about purchasing this pup(she has one blue eye and one green eye which you cant see in the photo).

How do I know how big it will get? I'm really looking for a mini(under 12 pounds)..I think she'd be around 3 months old now.

I noticed that she had red eyes as well..what could this be from.
I tried to research the breeder (Terri Cornett) but all I could find is this "Arkansas	42306	71-A-1222	Cornett, Terri	Pine Street Kennels	P. O. Box 10	Drasco	72530" from http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_wel...rt_holders.txt

Also is this what they call a double dapple(which I heard has health problems)?

That day every Dachshund owner dreads happened just a few days ago. My mom called me at work saying my Harriet would cry whenever she was picked up or put down. My mom was going to put her on her line outside and there was a rabbit right outside the door. Harriet took off after it into a neighbors yard. She came back and after that was when she started to cry.
I had x-rays done and it's not a confirmed true case, but its IVDD of the T11-T12 vertebrae. My vet told me strict kennel rest, Tramadol, and Rimadyl. She's already looking a little better but definately not quite herself. She's confined to an x-pen in the living room and a leash attached to the table in the kitchen so she can at least be around us in both rooms without any fear of her using the stairs, sneaking outside through an open door, or jumping on the furniture.
My vet said to kennel rest her 2 weeks. I've been reading that it should be 8 weeks of kennel rest. I just want some opinions as to how long she should be confined. I'll do whatever is best for her!! I just don't want to start anything too soon! :sadqueen:
Also, does anyone know if theres anything else I can do preventatively? Are harnesses better for IVDD dogs? Anything that people have tried to help? Anything is helpful. I just want to learn more about this.

Hey folks, I adopted Tiki just over two months ago. He is three years old. He had an untreated back injury two years ago. His spinal exams and exrays show natural fusion over the years. He is not in any pain, he is very happy and loves to play. He is very wobbly on his rear legs and tries hard to walk. He really is amazing under the circumstances. He has one big problem that my wife is getting frustrated over.. he can't control his bladder.. when ever he walks, he leaves a long urine trail. I can tell he doesn't even know he is doing it. Does anyone know of any treatments or fixes other than diapers? I will try anything. I am keeping Tiki, I won't give up in him. Any idea is worth trying. Thanks, John

Hello all, my wife and myself have 4 amazing Dachshunds. My oldest named Millie had back surgery about 10 years ago, she now has some heart issues and has lost allot of weight. She is 16 years old, but still shows her love daily. We then rescued a double silver dapple little boy who was physically abused. It took some time to gain his trust, but he is the most loyal and loving little guy, his name is Roscoe. We then rescued an 11 year old black and tan with Epilepsy who was stuck in a crate the majority of his life, we got him on Thanksgiving day, very appropriate. We were able to love him and make him comfortable for a year before he died of cancer. His name was Jakie-boy, he was my little buddy, we went everywhere together, a heart of gold. We then Got Isabella from a young girl who couldn't take care of her. She is our real life teddy-bear, and thank God has been fairly healthy. We just adopted Tiki, he is 3 years old. He had a back injury 2 years ago that went untreated. He has minimal use of his rear legs. He leaves a urine trail every time he walks. I won't give him up. Help! I need ideas before my wife says enough on our new carpet. He is not in any pain, and sometimes can hold it, but 90% of the time it's like a running faucet. I have only had him 2 months, but as you all know, with Dachshunds, it only takes 1 second to fall in love. Thanks, and I'm glad to be a part of the group.

When I got home from work Thursday afternoon I sent my oldest daughter to let the dogs out, and was faced with what I had always feared. Max my oldest dachshund (3 total) was down. I immeadiatly rushed him to work and was honestly prepared for euthanasia. After a neuro exam the Dr. recommended a high dose steroid injection, pain meds and to give him the night so that one of the other Dr.'s could asses him in the morning. I agreed and Max stayed the night at my clinic.

Friday morning the three of us gathered in an exam room with Max, by that time he had lost deep pain. Now I spent over a year working in neurology, I have assisted in hundreds of back surgeries. I also spent much of my time running the rehab facility and had "saved" dogs who's owners had given up. I know the importance of time, but I am technically a single mom as my husband travels for work and is gone 3 weeks a month. I have two children, and 3 other dogs. I work full time plus some, and with both children being in school I also have obligations there. With Max loosing deep pain I knew a decision had to be made, either he had surgery I couldn't afford or euthanasia. As he sat on the exam table unable to understand why his legs didn't work I teared up looking into his bog brown eyes. Then I heard the words....surgery. The Dr. I work for had done back surgeries, he studied neuro in vet school, and had done a few through general practice in cases just like mine. He offered to do it free to give Max a chance!

Now without a myelogram or MRI we were kind of shooting blind. Max's x-ray showed a narrowing at T11-12. I chose right side just by gut instinct. Max's sire, and two siblings all herniated on the right. At 2pm Max was intubated and taken into surgery. The entire staff was on pins and needles. Once the skin layer was pulled back a lot of bruising was visible on the muscle layer which at least indicated we were at the right spot. First visual of the spinal cord didn't give either of us much hope; it was bluish in color. As the disk material was removed it returned to a healthy pink. Fenestration was done two spaces below and one above. Two hours after we started Max was closed and moved to recovery.

Max spent Friday night at the clinic and I picked him up about 12pm yesterday. He had deep pain in 3 digits on the left and one digit on the right! He still doesn't have full bladder control, he mostly licks to help stimulate himself between expressing. He is currently getting carafate twice daily an hour before his dex injections, and tramadol. Again I know the timeline for recovery, and every dog is different so time is all you have. Max will be 9 in October and could very well live to be a ripe old teenager but I have to consider the big picture. I am almost never home, and while I can take him to work with me there are days when I leave work, pick up the girls and have to rush to a practice or scouts. I want to give him the best possible chance since it would be a waste to put him through surgery just to give up so soon. I'm just looking to vent and to share my experince and to hear from others I know have gone through this. It's so very different from sitting on the other side of the fence. I used to give others hope that their family member would walk again, now I am the one needing that.

Reece had some movement and feelings in hindlegs before surgery. Monday, she had surgery...Now the vet has me scared because I brought her home yesterday (3 days later)...the Vet said he had never sent one home that was not urinating on their own...he didnt seem pleased with her post op response. Now Saturday, she has still not urinated on her own. I am expressing 3 times a day. Just need encouragement that this can be normal and she is just taking a little longer. She is taking 1/2 of a Rimadyl 25mg, 2 times a day and 1/2 Tramadol 50 mg, 3 times a day. I am massaging, doing physical therapy and standing her. And she is getting soft crate rest. She is feeling much better from surgery pain, today. Yet, I really see no signs of movement. She did poop in the grass when I took her out today and stretched and extended her legs. But what is normal???? If I dont see movement soon, does that mean she is in the 5% that do not have success from surgery...please help!

My dog Beany is a 6 year old miniature wire haired dachshund. Last Wednesday she got ill (12 August 2010) and it took the vet till Friday (13th August 2010) to work out she had IVDD she lost the use of her back legs on Friday and as I could not afford the operation the vet gave her a large dose of steroids and then tablets which she is still taking. On Monday (16th August 2010) she lost deep pain in her legs and so is now incontinent, we brought her home and she is eating and drinking normally and there is a small amount of resistance in her legs when massaged (was none on Monday or Tuesday) but still has no deep pain. We are giving her till next Friday to see if she starts to feel pain. I feel awful but I do not know if I can keep her alive if she cannot feel her back legs and there is no change of recovery. Both me and my partner work full time and we do not feel it would be fair to her. I want to know if there is any chance she may recover deep pain in her legs again. The vet has given her a 20% chance of feeling pain again and I know that while she is on steroids if she is going to get better it will be now and the longer that time goes by and she cannot feel deep pain the less chance there is for her feeling it again. If she feels deep pain and she has to have months of cage rest I can cope with that it is the lack of feeling that is the problem.

We just adopted a miniature Dachshund from a local rescue group and absolutely love her. We do not have alot of information about our little Lucy's past experiences but know she is not housetrained. We know we have to be patient and consistent and take her outside to the same spot every time to do her business. Any other tips about potty training a dog approximately 1.5 to two years old? She sleeps in the crate all night long with barely a wimper and the only time she does her business outside is first thing in the morning as we take her directly from crate to spot.

We have tried limiting her space in the house and keeping her on a leash. We take her out frequently and when she comes back in the house often does her business immediately and because she is so low to the ground we are often too late to bring her to the spot.

We know this will take time and we are more than willing to be patient because this dog has a wonderful personality and has already been through much more than we know.

We began "basic training" last night with a dog trainer and she is receptive to "sit" command. We also use the word "potty" everytime we take her out.

I feel the best advice will likely come from people who have been through this and understand the breed.

Thank you very much!

Hello, my name is Cheryl Anderson and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have two doxies (half brother and sister) named Zoe and Winston. Unfortunately they both have been diagnosed with IVDD. I also have an Australian Shepherd mix named Sheba. I am a member of All American Dachshund Rescue and am also an OTRA (On The Road Again) verified transporter. I am so glad that I found this board and hope to make a lot of new friends here.
