The Good and The Bad

Hi All-

I discovered a great new chew bone for Liesel. It's made by Nylabone and it's called a Carrot Bone. It's very hard and made of carrots, cheese protein and gelatin and no artificial ingredients or colors. She really seems to love it - so much so that she's been keeping it hidden, and every now and then she appears with it (what's left of it). I bought it at Petco. It's a little pricey, through, at $3.59. I'll have to find a cheaper source because I don't think it will last too long.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. There is also another bone from Nylabone called chicken & cheez chooz. It can even be microwaved to change its consistency. My dogs love them and they actually last for a few days. Unusual in my home. Petland sells them and they cost 3 for $3.39.

Happy chewing!!!!

Take your steilized bone and stuff it with low fat cheese. It will keep them occupied for hours and they will continue to chew on the bone after the cheese is gone.

Also, if they are such chewers, try taking old wash cloths and wetting and freezing them. They will rip the day lights out of it however it will again keep them busy for hours unless they also swallow what they chew and in that case the wash cloth is a no go. Linda

Feel the most content when my guys are playing with their Kong toys. Kongs are cone - shaped rubber balls that have an erratic bounce when thrown (to really confuse your pup in a chase). They are not only too tough for most dogs to break, they can also keep a dog's attention for some time while they try to remove neat treats (bits of cheese, peanut butter, biscuits, etc) from the Kong's hollowed middle. We also were giving him Nylabones to chew on, which he happily did and would chew one down to replacement point in a couple of weeks or so. With still no progress on his tummy condition, the vet eventually poked his finger up his poor backside and proceeded to extract a good couple of teaspoons full of Nylabone bits that had just been sitting there inside him for a while. No wonder the poor little guy had such a hard time. After that, no problems=no Nylabones.

So, word of warning. If you have a really aggressive chewer (these are dachsies after all), be very careful and really watch whether they can chew little bits of toys or bones and swallow them.

Hi folks! I just got a call from one of Oscar's daughter's aunties. Tootsie, Oscar's little year old girl had emergency surgery last night. Evidently she hadn't been eating in a couple of days, the vet took x-rays and could see something that appeared like a 'staple' in Tootsie's belly. When they operated they found a small piece of wire and a large piece of a squeaky toy that created a blockage in her intestines. The vet said she was a very fortunate little dachsie. She's doing pretty good today, but healing thoughts and prayers would help both Tootsie and especially her worried momma.

Thanks,

Judy Wade

Dear List,

In my ramblings, I ran across the following web site which I though some of you might like to visit. It is titled How to use a Kong and tells all about the Kong which is mentioned frequently on this site. I had never seen one so it was of interest to me.
Check it out! How to Use Kong

Hope you enjoy.
