Symptoms: The signs that could take months to become evident,if mild, include; lethargy, obesity, drooping of eyelids. I would seriously consider having her thyroid checked. The inability to lose weight when the dog is on a restricted diet is an indication that you could be dealing with an underactive thyroid. How much exercise does she get. If she is overweight, I would start her on a regimented exercise program that starts with walking around the block and gradually work her up to about 1 mile per day. The vet can provide you with medication that will clear up whatever is irritating her intestial tract. I would be very surprised if it is anything more than a non-specific problem. Keep her on hamburger and rice for a couple of days after she receives the medication. If she is receiving any kind of table scraps, I strongly recommend that be stopped. If you are giving her treats, convert those to carrots, or green beans. For every pound that she if overweight, she has had to grow one mile of blood vessels to support the weight. Zorro has hypothyroidism (not uncommon in dachshunds, at all) and he has one heck of a time with weight. I am a happy camper to keep him at 30 lbs--ideal for him would be about 27. Lexie does not budge off of 23 and she is completely normal for tyroid. Linda Sullivan
Have you had a thyroid check done? Sometimes a hypothyroid will cause skin problems and some lines of Dachshunds are prone to this. To stop a dog from chewing on a spot I apply perfume around the spot. They usually won't chew where the perfume is. I had a dog that was allergic to sprinkle fresh carpet deodorizer. Have you tried to change your dog food, floor cleaner, soap, bedding ect. Hope you find a solution to your problem. Gretchen Miller
