Also, while getting regular shots for your dog, be sure to have the vet do annual checkups, as well. Good preventive medicine.

Kay asks:

This vet of mine said that it is common for Dachshunds to react. I don't know how many dachshunds he takes care of so I'm not sure how accurate he is.

Hi Kay and Cybercom Folks!

There is part of the distemper vaccine that is called "Leptosporosis", and is a known allergen to dachsies. You can request to have your dachsie vaccinated with the distemper vaccine that DOES NOT include Lepto. (the distemper vaccine is actually comprised of the following meds: distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and leptosporosis).

My Pookie is the only one of my bunch that has had reactions. Tomorrow I'm going to start back working part-part-part time for veterinarian's (I'm not quitting my regular day job) again. I'll check to see what the latest vaccine is comprised of, and will report my findings on Monday!

Have a great weekend everybody!

The vet gave Bass some cortezone and some Benedrill. As a precaution, he gave Guiness (who after all of this time was acting completely normal - given the circumstances) some cortezone as well.

Have had allergic reactions in doxies before and know how scary it is first time. Beware....reactions get worse with each succeeding introduction of allergen. Vet should know to give Benadryl 30 - 45 minutes PRIOR to immunization next time, and send you home with antihistamine such as chlorphanaramine. Don't leave doxies alone, if possible, for 24 hours following vaccine. There can still be enough in their system to outlast the antihistamine and cause a reaction that much later (you know this to be true). Good luck.

Pam S: I am so glad you were able to get your sweet ones to the vet in short order and that all is going better. I will relate a story not for fear purposes but purely for information.

My very first Dachsie was Schatzie, a beautiful red mini with a bubbly personality and a real sweetheart. I was living in Texas at the time and was very pleased with the performance of my vet. When I took Schatzie for his regular round of immunizations (they numbered three down in Texas), my vet was on vacation and his assistant was in the office. He also was a vet so I did not think much about it. The first two shots were great, the dog never felt a thing or made a noise. The third shot he gave out a squeal like I have never heard before or since!

Everything seemed fine until the next day. It started with a slight stiff neck, then he could not lift his head, then he could not move much. By the second day he was in considerable pain and I was getting ready to take him to the vet. (I was getting ready for back surgery myself!) I was on the couch, holding my Schatzie and my mother walked in from the airport. I was crying, my dog was moaning on my shoulder. We rushed to the vet (over 20 miles away) but Schatzie died on my shoulder. The upshot of this whole deal was that this quack vet had stuck the needle too far and had hit the spinal cord, giving my little doll an infection which went straight to the nervous system. There was nothing to be done. Believe me, I take all immunizations very seriously now. I always watch carefully for any reaction. I just hope no one will go through what I had to endure.Give your sweet ones a hug from all of us here in Montana! Jason, owned by Frau Heidi, Fraulein Katy, Madchen Molly, and Baron von Ben. Have a great Friday and weekend you all! Jason Menagh

Rooney is a wee bit over one year old, her second set of puppy shots made her very sore (she yelped every time I touched her) and the vet just gave me the "oh-you-must-be-one-of-THOSE-moms" look when I came crying into the emergency room. Minnie swelled up around her nose with her second set of shots. The swelling went down by the next morning and she never acted like anything was wrong. The list encouraged me to alert the vet. She had two more sets of shots to go. Both times the vet gave her benedryl first and then kept her in his "emergency room" for a few hours to make sure she was all right. A good vet is a treasure. I am soooooo happy with ours. They hug and kiss my babies and always go above and beyond the call. I would recommend them to anyone. I wish they treated people...I like them better than my own doctor. Janet

Benjamin was 5 years old when he started to react to his shots. He is allergic to the Lepto. The same thing happen. He got his shot, I noticed he was itching. One hour after we were eating dinner, and he had bumps all over his head. Karen Merleno
