Question:
I am sure this questions has been asked and answered before
but.......why do dogs eat grass and is it harmful? PJ is going thru
this grazing thing. We go for a walk and I think he is sniffing out a
spot to do his business and no, he is eating grass. What gives and how
can I stop him.
Leslie
He could vomit in the dog yard but there is no grass there. He was fine
in the morning.
Smudge has been grazing lately, maybe like humans eating dandelion greens
in the spring.

My suggestion would be to catch his attention when you see him doing it,
distract him, or simply pull him in closer. Make scheduled "pit stops" on
known ground, and keep walking...
Les, reminds me of the night I got up and pulled grass for Spike and
brought it in for him. He had me up 1700 times and around 3AM, I went
out and pulled a couple of handfuls for him so he didn't have to get me
up.
Perhaps it's an old wives' tale, but I repeatedly heard that dogs eat grass
to calm their stomachs. A few of the dogs I had when I was younger ate
grass, with no apparent ill effects. My caution would be to not allow him
to eat any grass you're not sure what it's been treated with. (Which could
virtually be ANY grass but your own.) Around here I've seen numerous
warnings during the spring about keeping off the treated grass for 2-3 days
(!) The problem with the tiny yellow warning signs, though, is that young
kids are attracted to them and in my previous neighborhood, would tromp
through the grass to pull them up and play with them. Then you have no
indication of what grass is covered with what icky chemical.
Bridget doesn't usually eat grass...maybe once or twice...but I do
remember a doxie that I had when I was a chid did it any time my parents
went away on vacation and there was a babysitter at the house with us.
When I learned that they do that to calm their stomachs, it all made
sense to me.
