Losing a Few Unwanted Pounds
Since I'm a whimp about maintaining diets (personally OR for my dogs!!) I
recommend doing something that initially gets some of the weight off fairly
quickly (yes, yes, I know that most will say the slower the better, but I
like getting back to the regular - premium - food and I don't hold up long
under the starving stare). Canned Science Diet Light can take a 1/2 -1 pound
off a miniature dachshund in about a week according to a good breeder friend
of mine. She opens both ends of the can and slide the whole thing out on a
plate. Then slice into 1/6ths. Feed 1/6 twice daily for 1 week and you
should see weight loss without starvation or lack of nutrition. For Dry dog
food eaters, I can personally recommend Eukanuba Light. It takes a little
longer, but you can feed the same portion you normally do and have fewer
calories. For maintenance, you can mix Eukanuba Light with your regular dog
food to the degree that keeps the weight where you want it (i.e. 60% regular
40% Light, 70/30 or whatever). Get out those baby carrots instead of dog
biscuits or food from the table. My dogs all love them. Some of them took a
bit to develop a taste for them, but when nothing else was in the offering,
they came around. Haven't done it but have heard a number of people talk
about substituting canned green beans for a portion of dog food each day.
Don't suppose this would be very nutritious for more than 3-4 days at a
stretch, but again I think you should get it done and get it over with! Good
luck. Cheri MINIDOXIES@aol.com

Howdy!
Have you tried any of the Lite (low calorie) premium formulas? Ask your vet
if your girl needs to lose weight, and if so there are prescription diets
too, it the situation warrants it. If you cannot feel her rib cage easily,
and if she has lost her "hourglass figure" (that tapering off to a slimmer
profile from the rib cage back to her rump), she probably does need to lose.
This is very important for keeping the back in good shape. And yes,
exercise is important too, not only for the weight control advantages it
affords, but for the muscle tone it will provide. That goes a long way in
helping to avoid back problems in this breed as well.
Best of luck!
