- Perform steps one and 2 in chest compression. ( 1- Feel for pulse or heartbeat 2- Open mouth and clear away secretions. Check for a foreign body. If found, remove carefully, if possible. If impossible to reach, execute The Heimlich Method. See below )
- Pull the tongue forward and close the mouth. Seal the lips with your hand.
- Place your mouth over the dog's nose and with a larger dog, blow steadily for three seconds. In a smaller dog, blowing briefly three times should be sufficient. The chest will expand. Release to let the air come back out.
- Continue until the dog breathes on his/her own, or as long as the heart beats.
Heart Massage by itself provides for both movement of air and pumping of blood. For best results, combine Heart Massage with Mouth -to - Nose Resuscitation (see above). This will require two people, one to administer heart massage and the other to give mouth - to - nose breathing.

- Continue until the heart beats on its own, or for five minutes.

To dislodge foreign matter from your dog's larynx
Place your dog on its side and, using both hands palms down, apply quick thrusts to the abdomen just below the dog's last rib. If the dog won't lie down, grasp either side of the rib cage and squeeze in short thrusts. Make a sharp enough movement to cause the air in the lungs to force the object out.
