Canine Arthritis
Rascal (at 16 lbs) gets 250 mg vitamin C, 100 IU vitamin E, and 50 mcg
Selenium
every day. I split the dosages so he gets half every 12 hours. Both vitamin
C
and vitamin E are antioxidants which boost the immune system and help with
joint problems. Vitamin E also helps his skin and coat condition. Selinium
is
a mineral which helps the body utilize vitamin E.
He also gets two enzyme supplements. Prozyme goes on his food and helps him
better digest and use nutrients. (This is also used in people particularly
AIDS patients to help digestion and avoid diarrhea.) I'm not sure of the
spelling of the key ingredient in the second supplement; I do know it's
available in health stores. The brand name I use is "Geri-zyme". It's also
an
antioxidant and helps with stiff joints. My vet reccomends it for any dog
with
joint problems (such as athritis) and any dog over 8 years old. It's largely
liver based and Rascal thinks it's the best treat ever!

Adequan which is approved only for horses but my vet uses it on my
dachshund has keep him alive for four years. AT first he received
injection about three times a week and now he goes 10 -12 weeks. When we
started the drug he had been taken in to be put down as his hind end was
paralized. Apparently there is another drug that starts with a C that my
vet uses that is approved for use in dogs and is cheaper than the adequan.
I don't find the Adequan that expensive. My mini weighs 13 lbs. and it's
about 20 dollars a shot.
Lynne,
I think the drug you are looking for is COSEQUIN. It is available in
capsule form in regular and double strength from your vet. It is used
for arthritis and other joint ailments.
